POV DISCUSSION: High School Love On Episode 1

A new Friday drama aired yesterday, and it’s High School Love On – starring Kim Sae Ron and boy band Infinite members Woo Hyun & Sung Yeol. It’s about an angel who became human, after saving a male student.

The story sounds interesting enough for me to actually try it out, and of course the main factor is that it’s Kim Sae Ron! The first episode wasn’t excellent, but I would say it’s good enough – if you look pass the acting.

Personally, I felt that it would have been much more enjoyable if the casts (excluding Kim Sae Ron) were more experienced in acting, and that the episode wasn’t so choppy.

I’m just going to do a brief scene summary – not exactly a recap, followed by a discussion.

EPISODE 1 (recap by dramabeans can be found HERE.)

Okay, first things first – Kim Sae Ron plays an angel, who guides human to the afterlife.

However, Woo Hyun accidentally walks through her and Sae Ron is heard narrating that things started to get weird after that incident.

Ridiculous mother and daughter, who I don’t know how to describe. The daughter chases around Woo Hyun, and the mother comes to school and blames him for seducing her daughter. WHAT. The daughter randomly decides to commit suicide (though her character mentioned that it’s not her first time here), and Woo Hyun tries to stop her from jumping.

Kim Sae Ron is there to guide the daughter to the afterlife (it was the girl’s face in the book at first), but her book started to show both the girl and Woo Hyun.

Woo Hyun falls and Sae Ron stops him from falling on to her, saving his life.

And it turned her into a human.

She’s shocked that he can see her.

Outside the hospital. He stops her from running across the road, and she hears that his heart is beating too.

She saw and talks to her Sunbae, asking him to find out what happened and how she can return.

Sunbae reminds her that she’s not a human and told her to wait till he find a solution. Sae Ron warns him and tells him not to let Woo Hyun walk through him.

Okay – let me summarize. Sae Ron ends up sleeping over at Woo Hyun for the night, but he gets angry the next day and tells her to leave when she caused a problem. Sunbae is silently watching her.

Okay, meet Sung Yeol. He has a complicated family relationship – and he’s cranky.

So Sae Ron has no where to go, and she loiters around before looking over at Sung Yeol who was eating.

As he came out of the store, she shouts ‘Bad Man.’ He looks over at her, and she mentions that she wasn’t referring to him.

She sees that he has an umbrella, and gets under it, much to his amazement. He moves the umbrella, but she still moves along.

She scolds him for being bad just like Woo Hyun as he left, and he turns around to hand her the umbrella before leaving.

And we had pretty Kim Sae Ron under the rain 🙂

She walks alone, and is scared of the thought of dying as a human. She wants to go back.

She sees an oncoming truck and decides to ‘go back.’

THOUGHTS & DISCUSSION

The good stuff first – I like the story line, it’s interesting, fun & refreshing. An angel who became human and get into a love triangle. Fun, isn’t it? Kim Sae Ron does her role perfectly, and… she’s just so pretty.

It’s funny how she doesn’t have a clue on human life – and she’s amazed by the little things (like her heart beating). Of course, it’s also funny when she said that she wanted to sleep with Woo Hyun and wondered why she can’t when dramas do it all the time.

Now the bad stuff.

I find the episode quite choppy. It felt like I’m watching a webtoon, or a drama special – instead of a 20-episode drama. The scenes don’t connect, and a lot of scenes felt so random. I’m forgiving this for now, because maybe they needed to show us how all of them ended in the same school, so they needed to tell us the back-story quickly.

Next – acting. Oh my gwad, I cringe so bad while watching – I wondered if all of the newbie actors had gathered in one drama. Sung Yeol didn’t have much lines yet, so I’m not going to talk about him. Woo Hyun….sorry. Some parts I could just look past the acting, but at certain parts, I cringe so bad. I’m not saying he’s bad – because the ridiculous mother and daughter in the drama is even worse at acting. I think he needs a little bit more experience. Maybe the next few episodes would be better.

But the school girls in the class, in this episode and the girl who wanted to commit suicide and her mother, and even Sae Ron’s sunbae – OMGWAD. I cannot bear to watch the acting. It hurts so bad.

Well, but Kim Sae Ron and story line is still tempting so I’m still watching this. Until maybe if it messes up. But till then, if I close an eye towards the acting, I think I’m going to have fun.
